  • DAY 1

    Arrive in Pakse – Phou Asa
    Warmly welcome upon your arrival at Pakse International Airport. Your local guide will meet you at the airport for a short drive south to Ban Khiet Ngong to the wonderful Kingfisher Eco Lodge.

    Enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure. There are numerous activities available, like trek around the village or opt for an elephant ride to Phou Asa.

  • DAY 2

    Pakse – Champasak – Wat Phou – Oup Mong
    Have breakfast at your hotel before transfer to Champasak to visit the fascinating pre-Angkorian ruins of Wat Phou, one of South-East Asia's most dramatically situated temple sites and superb views of the Mekong River. Designated a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 2001, the site dates back to the 5th century, predating the famous Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Whilst much of the origins of Wat Phou are unclear, it is believed that the Khmer Hindus built the original temple and eventually made Angkor Wat their capital.

    Return to Champasak to admire the town's wonderful French colonial architecture before taking a ferry across the Mekong River to Ban Muang, where you can visit the atmospheric ruins of Oup Mong, a Khmer temple at Ban Houei Tomo, set deep within the forest.

    Return to the Kingfisher Eco Lodge in the afternoon, the remainder of your day is yours to spend as you wish.

  • DAY 3

    Phou Asa – Jungle Elephant Safari
    Start your day at the village of Kiat Ngong, at here you are not only for the beauty of the landscape and novelty of the elephant treks, but also to support the future of such low-impact development in Laos. You will meet the elephants and their mahouts before setting off out across the surrounding paddy fields and wetland.

    Entering the nearby jungle that surrounds the area, your seat gives you a unique vantage point to experience the jungle environment while bird sounds accompany you along the way.After several hours, break for lunch near a stream whilst your elephants are allowed to roam off in search of a light snack of their own!
    Continue riding throughout the afternoon, all the time learning some basic commands and tricks from your mahout, returning to the your lodge around 16:00.

  • DAY 4

    Phou Asa – Pakse – Vientiane
    Transfer to Pakse Airport in time for your morning flight to Vientiane. Upon arrival you will be met by your guide and transferred to your hotel.

    Enjoy a short tour of the city centre, taking in a few of the key highlights such as Wat Sisaket , with its thousands of miniature Buddha statues, and the Patuxay Monument which has more than a passing resemblance to the "Arc de Triomphe of Vientiane".
    In the evenings, there is a night market lining the riverbank, with some excellent local food stalls found nearby on Chao Anou Road. Elsewhere in the city you will discover a wide array of dining and entertainment opportunities, with something to suit every taste and budget.

  • DAY 5

    Vientiane – Oudomxay – Muang La
    Transfer to the Vientiane Airport in time for your flight to Oudomxay.
    Upon arrival you will be met by your guide and transferred to Muang La, located on the outskirts of Oudomxay. Leisure the rest of day and to enjoy the serenity of the Muang La Resort and its welcoming hot spring baths.

  • DAY 6

    Muang La
    Depart Muang La by 4x4 vehicle for a day of trekking and exploring the local area where you will discover minority hill tribe people and their fascinating way of life.

    Commence trekking along a mountain trail that follows a meandering stream where you may encounter local farmers cultivating the fertile land, fishing in the river and hunting for small game. Your trek will take you through lush vegetation and dense forest until you reach the beautiful village of Ban Phavie, a Khamu village atop a hill with superb views over the surrounding area.

    After a picnic lunch continue on to a beautiful waterfall where you can relax and take a refreshing dip.
    Return to Muang La in the late afternoon where the remainder of your day is at leisure.

  • DAY 7

    Muang La – Nam Ou River – Nong Khiaw
    Take a morning drive to the riverside town of Muang Khau where ou will take a slow boat down the Nam Ou River to Nong Khiaw. En route, stop to visit Muang Ngoi. Only accessible by boat, it was once a quaint village, nestling at the foothill of a giant limestone outcrop. Now it’s an ideal place for travelers to take a break whilst coasting up and down the Nam Ou. Arrive in Nong Khiaw in the late afternoon. A friendly junction town, popular with travelers heading to the north and to the east, there are a handful of excellent restaurants to choose from close to the bridge.

    The remainder of your day is at leisure so why not take a stroll along the riverbank, wander through local villages, or just settle back with a Beer Lao!

  • DAY 8

    Nong Khiaw – Luang Prabang
    ​Morning departure by car for Luang Prabang, taking the scenic route that passes amongst rolling hills enjoying intermittent views of the Nam Ou River.
    Stop en route to visit the Pak Ou caves, which house literally thousands of Buddha statues, hidden from the looting Chinese Haw in times gone by.

    Arrive in Luang Prabang in the early afternoon, where the remainder of your day is at leisure.

  • DAY 9

    Luang Prabang
    An option for early-risers is to rise before dawn to witness tak bat, to the lines of orange-robed monks leaving their pagodas to receive offerings of food from the residents of Luang Prabang. It’s an iconic sight and for many one of the highlights of their stay in Luang Prabang, and can be arranged on any early morning during your stay.

    After breakfast, visit the Royal Palace hosting a range of interesting artifacts for a guided audio tour. We then begin our temple tour taking in some the city’s most beautiful, including the magnificent Wat Xiengthong, with its roofs sweeping low to the ground, representing the classical Luang Prabang style, as well as Wat Mai and Wat Visoun, known as ‘The Water Melon Stupa’ due to its shape. In the afternoon, visit the excellent Arts and Ethnology Centre which gives us a further insight into the ethnic mix and culture of Laos. We then visit the weaving and textile villages of Ban Xangkhong and Ban Xienglek. Our final stop is a climb to Phousi Hill offering a spectacular sunset and a panoramic view over Luang Prabang and the Mekong River. Overnight at hotel in Luang Prabang.

  • DAY 10

    Luang Prabang – Shangri-Lao
    8:00 After breakfast you will be picked up by the Shangri-Lao's driver for the short journey to the Shangri-Lao Classic Explorer Camp & Expedition, 15km outside Luang Prabang (shared transfer) where you adventure will begin with a 5 km elephant ride through forests and over hills to the hidden Huay Sae Valley – in the same way Dr. Neis did over a century ago.
    After reaching the protected valley, you’ll leave the elephants and enjoy a luxury lunch of traditional Lao food with wine by a secluded waterfall. Depending on the water level you may swim in the cool, natural pools before continuing with a 5 km trek on foot. The adventurous trail crosses bamboo bridges and passes waterfalls with blue pools and dense jungle.

    Down at the Nam Khan River, a luxury bamboo raft is waiting your arrival to take you back to the elephant camp. You’ll float slowly downstream on this relaxing 5 km journey and enjoy a coffee as you relax and watch the traditional village life of farmers and fishermen along the river. Or take the option of a 30 minute visit to the beautiful Tad Sae Waterfall.
    In the late afternoon you’ll arrive at the camp where your luxury tent is ready for check-in. Spend the rest of the day at the jacuzzi swimming pool or go for a walk with your guide to visit a local village.

    In the evening a delicious barbecue dinner will be served under the starry sky.

  • DAY 11

    Shangri-Lao – Luang Prabang
    You’ll start with breakfast on the riverside while the sun slowly rises over the mountains. The remote villages are springing to life as you watch the villagers put small boats into the river, tend to their fields, take their children to school or wash their clothes in the river. After breakfast your guide will introduce you to your elephant and it’s time for your Mahout training. Bond with her as you receive your basic training to be a mahout. With real hands-on experience you may climb onto your elephant and control her riding bareback on her neck.

    After your mahout training you will ride your elephant bareback to the river where you bathe her and guide her through the river back to camp.

    Back at the camp, help your mahout to put on the howdah seat on your elephant, before saying good-bye and thank you by offering her some delicious bananas. Your guide will also teach you more about the relationship between mahouts and elephants.
    11:30 Check out of your luxury tent.

    Enjoy your lunch by the riverside or on the deck of the jacuzzi swimming pool.

    In the afternoon, you may stroll through the nearby village and visit the small temple with your guide. Experience the local lifestyle in the remote village and learn about the ethnic groups of Laos.
    16:30 – 17:00 leave the camp and return to Luang Prabang where your guide will drop you off at your hotel (shared transfer).
